What is a fossil?

• Evidence of ancient life preserved in sedimentary rocks. Paleontology is the
study of fossils. Archeology is the study of human remains and activity.

• There are approximately 10,000 fossil specimens in the collection, half of these fossils need to
be ‘prepared’.

• An entire ecosystem has been preserved on the Reservation from the Late Cretaceous period
and the following types of fossils have been found – fish, birds, crocodiles, mammals, reptiles,
plants and dinosaurs.

• The Tribe has one of the world’s largest collections of Edmontosaurus dinosaur fossils.
